What is tomatillo or “Mexican paradižnik”?
Tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa / Physalis philadelphica) is an important traditional crop of Mexico and Central America. The fruits are covered with a characteristic paper lantern, and the color can be green, yellow, purple or even golden-green. The taste is fresh, slightly sour, often with delicate citrus notes – making tomatillo the basis for salsa verde, types of sauces, curries, stews, baked sauces and fresh salsas.
The plants are lush and strong, they are not self-fertile, so they need at least two different plants for a successful harvest. This mix naturally provides that.
Description of the varieties included:
Purple Tomatillo – A purple, aromatic tomatillo with a slightly sweet flavor. The fruits are round, medium-sized, ideal for baking, salsa verde morado, and decorative plates.
Yellow Tomatillo – Light yellow to golden, round fruits with a delicate citrus aroma. Excellent for classic salsas, sauces and stews. Very productive and reliable variety.
Tomatillo Queen of Malinalco – Elongated, drop-shaped fruits of golden-green color. Soft, sweet-fresh flesh and less acid than other varieties. Common choice for fresh consumption as a fruit (similar to Andean strawberry)
