Perlite

Perlite is a lightweight, porous volcanic rock often used in gardening and plant cultivation to improve soil aeration and drainage. It is derived from volcanic glass, which expands into lightweight white granules when heated.

Main properties of perlite:

• Excellent drainage: Allows excess water to drain quickly and prevents moisture retention, reducing the risk of root rot.
• Airiness: Improves soil structure and allows better access of oxygen to the roots.
• Neutral pH: Does not affect the acidity or alkalinity of the soil.
• Sterile and lightweight: It does not contain diseases, pests or weeds and does not weigh down the substrate.
• Does not retain nutrients: Unlike vermiculite, it does not absorb minerals, but only helps in their even distribution.

Uses of perlite in gardening:

• As a substrate additive to improve drainage and aeration, especially in succulents and cacti.
• For seed germination, where it prevents water stagnation and provides a good air environment.
• When rooting cuttings, as it reduces the risk of rotting due to excessive moisture.
• In hydroponics as a growing medium because it does not retain water and allows control over nutrient supply.
• To improve the soil in clay soils, as it reduces their compaction and increases aeration.
