Once the paradižnika, pepper or chili seedlings have sprouted, the next important step soon comes – transplanting or picking seedlings.
Many gardeners skip this step or do it too late, which can affect plant growth and the final yield.
What does it mean to pick seedlings?
Pickling means transplanting young seedlings from a common seed tray into individual pots or larger cells.
This allows plants to:
- more space for root development
- better access to nutrients
- stronger growth
- less competition between seedlings
This is especially important for paradižniku, as it develops additional roots very well.

When is the right time to transplant?
The best time for picking is when the seedlings develop first real leaf.
These are the leaves that appear after the first cotyledons.
At that time, the seedlings are:
- strong enough for transplanting
- still small, so the roots are less damaged
- very flexible
If we wait too long, the roots often become intertwined and the seedlings are damaged when transplanting.
How to transplant seedlings correctly
The process is quite simple.
1️⃣ Prepare pots or larger planting cells.
2️⃣ Use a quality seedling substrate.
3️⃣ Carefully lift the seedling with a small spoon or chopstick.
4️⃣ Grab it by the leaves, not the stem.
5️⃣ Plant it a little deeper than it was growing before.
For paradižniku, planting deeper is even recommended, as it can develop additional roots from the stem.
What to do after transplanting
After picking, the seedlings need a few days to adapt.
During this time:
- water moderately
- make sure there is enough light
- do not expose them to direct strong sunlight immediately
After a few days, the seedlings will resume normal growth.
Why is pecking important?
If we transplant the seedlings on time, we get:
- stronger root system
- more robust plants
- fewer problems when later transplanting outdoors
This is one of the key steps in growing quality seedlings.
