Tomatoes Slovenian Black (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most interesting and historically intertwined varieties in our offer. It is regular, genetically rich variety, which combines exceptional taste, recognizable color and a unique migration story connected to Slovenia.
The variety is very little known in Slovenia, but much more so in the USA, where it was first described, as a variety that has been preserved in Slovenian emigrants. V Tiatiana's TOMATObase, one of the world's most respected databases on paradižniki, is estimated to be Jeff Fleming (Michigan, USA) received seeds from Slovenian families from Illinois, which she is said to have brought with her from Slovenia. From him the seed Slovenian Black spread throughout the United States.
On the French side TomatoFifou also appears unconfirmed assumption, that it could be a cross between the varieties Black Prince × Black Krim. This assumption was never confirmed and remains merely speculation, perpetuated among collectors.
Like most dark varieties, Slovenian Black has its genetic roots in lines from the former Soviet Union, where the dark paradižniki were created through centuries of natural selection. After returning to Slovenia, the variety acquired characteristics that adapted to our climate and taste local gardeners.
The fruits of Slovenian Black are medium to large, slightly flattened and ribbed, with a characteristic dark red to almost black color, most pronounced on the upper part of the fruit. The flesh is dense, extremely juicy and aromatic, with rich, sweet-smoky taste, which distinguishes the variety from many dark paradižniki. It is excellent for salads, fresh use, sauces, juices, bruschetta and gourmet dishes, where its complex aromatics come to the fore.
The plant has indeterminate growth (needs support), grows approximately 1.8–2m, and ripens in mid-season, approximately 70–80 days after transplanting. Slovenian Black is fertile, stable and well adapted to hot summers, while maintaining fruit quality even in less than ideal conditions.
