Why are paradižnika seedlings long and thin (stretched)?

When growing paradižnika seedlings, it often happens that the plants germinate, but quickly become long, thin and weak.

We call this phenomenon overgrown seedlings.

At first glance, it may not seem serious, but such seedlings later:

– they perform worse
– they lie down more easily
– they have a poorer harvest

🌱 What does it mean that seedlings are too tall?

The seedlings that are stretched are:

  • tall and thin
  • lighter colors
  • have long spacing between leaves
  • often tilt or fall

It is a plant's response to unsuitable conditions.

🔍 Main reason: too little light

The most common reason for stretched seedlings is lack of light.

When a plant does not have enough light:

👉 begins to "stretch" towards the light
👉 grows quickly in height
👉 the stem becomes thin and weak

This often happens:

– on window sills
– in cloudy weather
– if the seedlings are too far from the window

🌡️ Second important reason: too high temperature

If the seedlings are:

  • in a warm place (e.g. 22–25 °C)
  • and at the same time they don't have enough light

growth accelerates further.

The result is even more stretched plants.

💧 Third reason: too much water

Excessive watering encourages rapid growth, but:

– the roots are not strong enough
– the plant becomes “soft”
– the stem does not harden

🌱 Too dense sowing

If the seedlings are too close together:

– they take light from each other
– they grow upwards to reach the light
– they become even thinner

✅ How to prevent overstretched seedlings

1. More light

Place the seedlings in the brightest spot.

Ideally:
– south window
– additional LED lighting (if possible)

. Lower temperature after germination

After germination, reduce the temperature to approximately:

👉 18–20 °C (during the day)
👉 slightly less at night

This slows down growth and strengthens the plants.

3. Moderate watering

The substrate should be slightly moist, not wet.

4. Timely pickling

Transplant the seedlings when they develop their first true leaves.

This gives them more space and more light.

5. Slight air movement

A gentle air flow helps the stems strengthen.

🔧 What to do if the seedlings are already stretched?

Good news:

At paradižniku, we can often fix the problem.

👉 Transplant the seedling deeper
👉 bury part of the stem in the ground

Tomatoes can develop additional roots from the stem.

This way we get a stronger plant.

🎯 Key tip

Stretchy seedlings are not the result of a bad variety, but of conditions.

Most often it is a combination of:

– not enough light
– excessively high temperatures

If we fix this, the seedlings will be significantly stronger.
