{"id":8624,"date":"2026-03-22T11:07:57","date_gmt":"2026-03-22T10:07:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paradiznik.si\/?p=8624"},"modified":"2026-03-22T11:07:58","modified_gmt":"2026-03-22T10:07:58","slug":"zakaj-so-sadike-paradiznika-dolge-in-tanke-pretegnjene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paradiznik.si\/en\/zakaj-so-sadike-paradiznika-dolge-in-tanke-pretegnjene\/","title":{"rendered":"Why are paradi\u017enika seedlings long and thin (stretched)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When growing paradi\u017enika seedlings, it often happens that the plants germinate, but quickly become long, thin and weak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We call this phenomenon <strong>overgrown seedlings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first glance, it may not seem serious, but such seedlings later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 they perform worse<br>\u2013 they lie down more easily<br>\u2013 they have a poorer harvest<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf31 What does it mean that seedlings are too tall?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The seedlings that are stretched are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>tall and thin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lighter colors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have long spacing between leaves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>often tilt or fall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a plant&#039;s response to unsuitable conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2103\" height=\"1425\" src=\"https:\/\/paradiznik.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/pretegnjene-sadike-paradiznika.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8626\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paradiznik.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/pretegnjene-sadike-paradiznika.jpg.jpg 2103w, https:\/\/paradiznik.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/pretegnjene-sadike-paradiznika.jpg-768x520.jpg 768w, https:\/\/paradiznik.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/pretegnjene-sadike-paradiznika.jpg-1536x1041.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/paradiznik.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/pretegnjene-sadike-paradiznika.jpg-2048x1388.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/paradiznik.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/pretegnjene-sadike-paradiznika.jpg-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/paradiznik.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/pretegnjene-sadike-paradiznika.jpg-600x407.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2103px) 100vw, 2103px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd0d Main reason: too little light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common reason for stretched seedlings is <strong>lack of light<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a plant does not have enough light:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 begins to &quot;stretch&quot; towards the light<br>\ud83d\udc49 grows quickly in height<br>\ud83d\udc49 the stem becomes thin and weak<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This often happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 on window sills<br>\u2013 in cloudy weather<br>\u2013 if the seedlings are too far from the window<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf21\ufe0f Second important reason: too high temperature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the seedlings are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>in a warm place (e.g. 22\u201325 \u00b0C)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and at the same time they don&#039;t have enough light<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>growth accelerates further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result is even more stretched plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udca7 Third reason: too much water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Excessive watering encourages rapid growth, but:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 the roots are not strong enough<br>\u2013 the plant becomes \u201csoft\u201d<br>\u2013 the stem does not harden<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf31 Too dense sowing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the seedlings are too close together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 they take light from each other<br>\u2013 they grow upwards to reach the light<br>\u2013 they become even thinner<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2705 How to prevent overstretched seedlings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Lower temperature after germination<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After germination, reduce the temperature to approximately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 18\u201320 \u00b0C (during the day)<br>\ud83d\udc49 slightly less at night<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This slows down growth and strengthens the plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Moderate watering<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The substrate should be slightly moist, not wet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Timely pickling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Transplant the seedlings when they develop their first true leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This gives them more space and more light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Slight air movement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A gentle air flow helps the stems strengthen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd27 What to do if the seedlings are already stretched?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Good news:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At paradi\u017eniku, we can often fix the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 Transplant the seedling deeper<br>\ud83d\udc49 bury part of the stem in the ground<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tomatoes can develop additional roots from the stem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This way we get a stronger plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfaf Key tip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Stretchy seedlings are not the result of a bad variety, but of conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most often it is a combination of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 not enough light<br>\u2013 excessively high temperatures<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we fix this, the seedlings will be significantly stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pri vzgoji sadik paradi\u017enika se pogosto zgodi, da rastline sicer vzkalijo, vendar hitro postanejo dolge, tanke in \u0161ibke.
