Vigna unguiculata ssp. sesquipedalis, also known as long bean plant, Chinese beans or asparagus beans, is a tropical legume that is famous for its extremely long, thin pods, long ones too up to 60 cm. The pods are green, slim and flexible, with delicate, slightly sweet taste, similar to green beans, but with a more pronounced aroma. We enjoy them young and fresh, before the seeds develop, most often boiled, stewed, roasted or in wok dishes.
The plant is climber, which can reach 2–3 m high, therefore it needs support. Succeeds in warm, sunny locations z fertile, well-drained soil and regular watering. Maturation takes approximately 70–80 days from sowing, and bears fruit abundantly throughout the summer. The long bean is very popular in Asian cuisine, especially in Chinese and Thai dishes, where it is considered one of the tastiest types of legumes.
