Chives

Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) is a perennial plant from the bulbous family, valued for its delicate, hollow green leaves and mild onion aromas. It grows in dense bunches and forms decorative purple flowers, which are also edible. The taste is gentle and fresh, which is why chives are an indispensable addition to salads, egg dishes, potatoes, soups and spreads.

The plant is undemanding, durable and cold-resistant, so it grows for many years in the same place. It grows best on sunny to semi-shady position in well-drained soil. Regular pruning encourages the growth of new, tender shoots. Chives are ideal for gardens, herb beds and pots on the windowsill, as it does not require much care, but offers a lot of freshness and flavor.
