Shishito chili is a Japanese variety with very low spiciness, which is also often used as independent dish, similar to the Padrón chili. It's a plant medium lush, well-branched and reliably sets a large number of fruits over a long period.
The fruits are elongated, slightly wrinkled, approximately long 7–10cm. They are most often picked green, less often fully ripe red ones. A special feature of the variety is its uneven pungency – most fruits are very mild, and occasionally a slightly hotter one appears, which gives the dishes additional interest.
The taste is gentle, slightly sweet, and the spiciness ranges between 50–200 SHU. In Japan, the fruits are often prepared as a dish. yakishishito, where whole chilies are quickly roasted or fried and coarsely salted. Chili is also used for a similar Spanish dish called Padrón peppers.
