Vermiculite

Vermiculite is a natural mineral often used in gardening and plant cultivation for its ability to retain water, improve soil structure, and retain nutrients. It is extracted from natural silicate minerals and expands into lightweight, porous particles when heated.

Main properties of vermiculite:

• Water retention: It can absorb several times its weight in water, which helps retain moisture in the soil.
• Airiness: Improves soil structure and allows roots easier access to oxygen.
• Neutral pH: Does not affect the acidity or alkalinity of the soil.
• Nutrient retention: Absorbs and slowly releases important minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium.
• Sterile and lightweight: It does not contain diseases or pests and does not weigh down the soil.

Uses of vermiculite in gardening:

• As a substrate additive to improve aeration and water retention in potted plants.
• For seed germination, as it provides optimal conditions for the growth of young plants.
• When rooting cuttings, because it prevents rotting and allows for even moisture.
• As a soil improver in gardens, especially on sandy or clay soils.
• In hydroponics as a medium for plants that do not grow in soil.

Vermiculite is especially useful for plants that need even moisture, such as houseplants, vegetables, and flowers.
